…but glancing round, she found she had accidentally invaded the dining room of two river otters (Lontra canadensis)...
We sat very quietly and watched them eat their crab dinners…

That is a super little lifesaver and a very thoughtful gift. What a lovely place to go and sit for a while. Just absolutely loved the otter photos.
It was such a thoughtful and unexpected gift! Constance immediately suggested a stroll to the beach, and I complied just to humour her despite it having been a very long day at work… how absolutely thrilling to find ourselves so close to the otters as they feasted!
I can almost feel/smell the air and water! Are the crabs a regular part of a River Otter’s diet, or a treat? Wonderful photos!
They are extremely versatile carnivores, and eat whatever is handy. As these ones are next to the sea they feast daily on crab and fish.
Two wonderful surprises for Constance! The bathing ring and the otters are both such a treat.

wonderful photos. Love the life preserver….so pretty…those colors! And the otters. Last year we had the joy of seeing family (4 of them) . We were picnicking in a remote area near a small pond..that happened to be near a river. The otters came up from the river to frolic in the pond..sliding down the bank into the water over and over. To top it all off there was a bald eagle in a tree watching them. Was a magical experience. Unlike you I did not have a good camera to record the experience. How great that you did!!! Thanks.
It was serendipitous! Lucky that I happened to be there with my camera, and that they were gambolling, frolicking and dining close enough, and uninhibited enough for me to get a few pictures! The sloshing waves and their loud crunching was memorable…but it sounds like your muddy otter escapades stuck in your mind even without a camera – that’s good!
What a lovely day – first receiving an unexpected and splendid gift, then being treated to the up-close delight of the otter feast!
It was actually warm too – a bonus when you live as close to the sea as we do!
Thank goodness for the life preserver. Those little otters are cute, but can we say, “what sharp teeth you have, my dear”?
Very very sharp! and enough force to crack open a crab! We were very quiet and didn’t draw attention to ourselves while they were exercising their shiny sharp teeth!
