Bonnet Flowers
Young human chose this Columbine plant for me. We put it into the garden and waited to see what the flowers looked like…
.
.
…it’s called “Granny’s Bonnet. We like the flower, but can’t understand the name…it doesn’t look like any bonnet Mormor ever put on her head!
.
.
Rhododendron flowers, on the other hand make perfect bonnets!
.
.
May is the season for Rhododendrons in our neighbourhood! We have several different colours in our garden, so Floradora has many choices!
.
.
She first thought the dark pink one was her favourite, until she saw the white one…
.
.
…and it was very dainty and sweet, but she thought it might be prone to getting dirty…
.
.
…so she tried on the painted pink and white bonnet…
.
.
…and then the purple one!
.
.
…then she couldn’t decide which one was her favourite!
.
.
Isn’t it lovely to see those beautiful little flowers in front of Floradora? It is like looking at a milliner’s shop with pretty little headpieces ready to adorn a sweet little head.
We love bonnet season around here – some rhododendrons have absolutely spectacular petals – overwhelming in size and colour!
The flowers labelled as Columbine don’t look anything like the columbine I’m familiar with. I wonder if they were mislabeled somehow. Rhodies do make perfect bonnets for the Hitties!
The Granny’s Bonnet is definitely an Aquilegia…but has multiple petals, so it is very “frilly” We have some purple ones with the same petal shape, as well as the more classical flower shape. I have been hoping to find a red and yellow “native” columbine plant but haven’t come across one for sale yet!
oh my this made me smile…how very cute!!!
Bonnet Season is one of our favourite times of the year!
