Scrap Happy October Sewing
Young Human and I made a sleeping cap…
…it is for a relative in hospital, but she is modelling it in these photos while with the scraps…
.
.
…she made a blanket and pillowcase for her Hittys. Cooky got to try them out…
.
.
….and it looked so cosy Henrietta jumped in to snuggle…
.
.
…then Cooky fell asleep and had sweet kitty dreams!
.
.
Young Human loves making Hittys and humans happy!
We are happy to report that the sleeping cap keeps the nurses amused and our relative’s head warm while he recovers…
.
.
We also made some new handkerchiefs for our relative – he likes to use a cloth for his periodic nose-drips…
.
.
…luckily there was a nice little scrap, and with judicious piecing, there was enough for a Hitty dress, but alas, not quite wide enough to get the whole periodic table of the elements on the skirt.
.
.
We used a plain black lining…
.
.
…a narrow hem…
.
.
…and a single black button and button loop.
.
.
Henrietta is quite a little scientist. She admires her namesake Dr Bonnie Henry, the BC Medical Health Officer. She is also inspired by the former Alberta Medical Health Officer, Dr Deena Hinshaw, who wore a Periodic Table of the Elements dress during one of her public Covid Briefings:

Cooky is inspired by Henrietta!

ScrapHappy is a group of bloggers (links below) who post monthly about using up scraps! Any genuine scraps are allowed – no new materials. Blog posts are published on the 15th of the month, and it is always a treat to see what ingenious things people are doing with bits and pieces saved from the scrap heaps! If you think you’d like to join the group, contact Kate or Gun who devised and run it – their blogs are the first two links below:

What a lovely post. I hope your relative gets better soon. I am sure the hat and hankies will help.
I always look forward to Scrap Happy mid month time and see what you come up with. Young Human and her grandmother have come up with some wonderful items this time. I’m especially partial to that periodic table Hitty dress! Becky J
We love Scrap Happy time too – just a little contribution to the lessening of waste. Making the dress was fun! I can’t tell you how tempted I was to go to the store and buy a few more cm of fabric so I could get the whole table on the skirt!
Two very talented humans. I imagine the cap will have cheered your relative up no end and that dress is just amazing. I want one in human size even though I was bottom of the class in most science subjects with physics being the one I had most trouble with.
Smoking Lily is still making the Periodic Table human-sized dress, though it isn’t quite the same as the Hitty one! I think if you were to wear it, you might catch some chemistry molecules by osmosis!
Some gorgeous sewing and great that young human joined in the fun!
She’s usually game to start a project, and quite persevering too, we are both pleased when we end one!
Both humans are very clever and talented & here’s to your relative getting better soon ❤️🩹
Thanks so much! It is such a pleasure to work on little projects with my young human! And an extra delight to make the older relative happy thereby.
♥️
Perfect fabric for anything periodic 😉
Haha yes! Nose-drips especially!
Wishing your relative a speedy recovery, hopefully the sleeping cap will help. Periodically a clothing designer comes up with a delightful idea. Love the dress – both human and Hitty.
Haha yes – and the Smoking Lily designer is right here in Victoria! Lots of creative scientific brains here!!! Thanks for the good wishes on behalf of my relative…
wow so much going on in this post! How fun that good deeds of making things for the Quimper humans loved one leads to fun things for the Hitty family!! that dress is really special!! So is the ever so sweet quilt. (and of course that smashing night cap!)
The night cap is quite a hit on the hospital ward. It is functional and cute – I think our relative is quite amused too! We were so glad to have enough of a scrap leftover to make a Periodic Table Hitty dress!
I love your short stories and your beautiful dolls. That dress is absolutely a hit! Wouldn´t mind having one myself 🙂
Thanks! I believe the company that made the human-sized Periodic Table dress is making them again…the company is called “Smoking Lily” and they are here in Victoria!
Oh, these are magnificent! My best wishes to your relative, and I hope the cap and hankies aid in a speedy recovery. Just so people know, there’s also a version of a periodic table dress sold by Redbubble. Not as elegant as Henrietta’s, but the fabric is similar.
Thanks! We had fun making the cap and hankies, and I’m happy to say that they were much appreciated by the recipient (as were the blanket and pillowcase)! Good tip about the alternate Periodic Table dress!
I just want to echo the comments that have already been made: delightful cap and dress, and here’e hoping your relative will soon be able to leave the hospital. ❤️
Thank you so much. Our relative is mending, but slowly…
