August Garden Harvest
A few very welcome warm days at the end of August sent Floradora running for her bonnet…
.
…and she walked through the Rock avenue…
.
.
…and past the Autumn Crocus with her basket…
.
.
…and through the Leek avenue…
.
.
…to the bean poles!
.
.
Most of the beans are getting very tall…
.
.
Except the ones that turned out to be bush beans!
.
.
But Floradora picked enough beans for supper, and one last sugar snap pea pod, and a little tiny pattypan squash!

That’s a super sunbonnet. I feel I need a tiny basket like hers instead of the steel bowl I take out for picking my own beans and tomatoes. I get a handful of both every day, and the last few days some baby beets. Not a whole lot, but enough to add fresh flavour to whatever is on the menu.
A Steel Bowl works too! A very kind friend gave me the beautiful Hitty basket, made by a friend of hers in France! Our season is winding down, but there will be Leeks and Chard over the winter!
A bonnet, a basket and a bounty of produce surely has given Floradora a marvelous meander through various avenues. And all of this has been forwarded to us freely by the thoughtful mistress on Quimper Street. Thank you. I’m glad you had at least a few warm days in August.
What an odd summer it’s been here. Now, just as school will begin on Tuesday, the weather is the warmest it’s been all summer!
Love the Hitty view of the garden. Did you do the tatting on the bonnet?
I didn’t do the tatting, it was the hem of a “Guest Towel” But I made it into a nice pinafore and bonnet.
Oooh…. my first thought was delight at seeing tatting on her bonnet and then of course, the loveliness of the garden was the next delight! Thank you!
You are welcome! We love that bonnet – it casts such nice shadows and makes a nice dappled shade on her face!
delightful. I am especially entranced with that tiny squash and her gardening bonnet
The squash plants were not very successful this year – they went all mildewey and unhappy! However the tiny ones were perfect for Floradora!
I am enjoying climbing beans now too and a few tomatoes (not nearly as many as usual) and some summer squashes (also late and few). It is lovely to have their flavours.
We love the flavours of fresh things picked five minutes ago, and then eaten right away! Especially tomatoes, though we seldom get a good crop here as we are too close to the ocean and they don’t like our cool breezes and salty air. The beans are great though, and the swiss chard, and we are looking forward to harvesting the avenue of leeks this winter!
My leeks are pathetically small still but I am hoping they will fatten up.
