Knitting more Socks
On the recent trip to Minnesota, Missouri and Arkansas, I started knitting a pair of socks…
.
.
…I got a whole sock and most of the second one done on the trip (there was a lot of sitting around in airports, and on planes)…
.
.
…at home the knitting continued…and knitting and more knitting.
.
.
Meanwhile, Rose, the most experienced Quimper Hitty knitter gave Vanilla some advice on knitting the Mystery Christmas Stocking knit-along with Arne and Carlos.
.
Not having the Norwegian yarn they recommended, we delved into our stash and are using Shetland yarns since we have the right colours and appropriate needles. The yarns are smaller so we will end up with a smaller stocking, but the Hittys are modest in their expectations. Arne and Carlos say we should have fun so Vanilla tried on the toe of the stocking as a hat!
.
.
The mystery knit-along is fun! On the first day, we knitted the plain toe, and each day thereafter we will knit six rows of colourwork, which doesn’t seem like too impossible a task.
.
.
Arne and Carlos knit in the same style as my Swedish Great Aunt taught me, with the yarn in the left hand. We will be done by November 25th in good time for Christmas – I can’t wait for the next instalment!

Beautiful thing to knit something,… I am crazy about this. Thank you dear Hitty Lady, Love, nia
I am really enjoying the Knit-along project, and the other socks are almost done! They will be a gift for my granddaughter!
How nice.
Your colors on each item are so pretty. No doubt it’s fun to have the Hittys along to knit and learn with you.
It is fun! I find that the Quimper Hittys have encouraging smiles! They always hope I will just let them have the socks for Hitty sleeping bags, but are continually hopeful!.
Socks are good to knit when travelling because they don’t take up much room. A neighbour asked me to knit a Christmas stocking so i used my usual pattern but with thicker wool and needles and found some cross stitch patterns to use for colourwork. The idea of a knit-along is a good one . Maybe next year I will join in.
I am really enjoying the knit-along! Six rows a day seems to be doable, and not really daunting like an entire stocking would be! I like your idea of the cross-stitch on a “regular” sock too, or “Swiss Darning” would work too. Next year I will try and organise the right wool and get a bigger stocking. The Hittys may have modest expectations, but I know a young person who would like a big stocking with lots of treats!
A sock shawl! Adorable photos and nice socks in progress, love the yarn! That is on my list to learn how to knit someday, I actually bought a book on it from a charity thrift store.
There are some lovely yarns around these days! Books are great to learn from, and friends too, and videos. My son works at a knitting shop and the staff are very kind to beginners and very helpful. The beginning can be frustrating, with all the mysterious pattern notations, but it is just a skill like any other one, practice and perseverance will get you there (just ask Hitty Rose!!). My mother could do basic knitting and always wanted to knit socks but was afraid of the heels. So she ended up knitting a tube, then my dad would jump on his motorbike and bring it to me, I would do the heel, and he would take it back to her! We knit many socks together before she died!
I love the story of the team sock knitting with you and mother! With your son working at a yarn shop I bet knitting continues to run in the family!
you are right! My eleven-year old granddaughter is knitting bunny rabbits made from a square!
I am slowly learning to knit. (Can do the knit but not the pearl!) Been trying off and on for years! But love these socks and starting to feel a renewed “Nudge” to practice knitting more!!! (Love these socks the colors are fantastic~)
I love the colours too – there are some great self-patterning sock yarns – you just knit them and the colours appear in stripes or blocks or whatever…it’s lots of fun! Purl stitch isn’t impossible once you get the hang of it! There are some good videos…
oh how I love to watch those socks appear as tho by magic on your needles! Happy to see the girls having fun with the project. I am looking forward to seeing the Mystery stocking ….love the progress.
I love it too – the stocking does appear to grow! It is a toe-up sock so it lengthens and gets more complicated…the design is lovely! I am looking forward to seeing how it looks at the end!
I am enjoying Arne and Carlos Christmas Stocking Blog. I knit two last year. This year I’m just following along and not knitting along. I want to see what it looks like. I will probably knit more stockings in the future.
It is a great fun project – I really like that it is happening in November – Arne and Carlos are right that December seems too crowded! I am pretty sure that more Christmas stockings are in my future!
I do love a good knitting story ❤️ 🧶❤️
So do we! The Quimper Hittys always like to help with my knitting projects – so too do the cats!
