Scrap Happy Tea Cosy
My middle son acquired this Kilkenny touque from somewhere or other…
.
.
…he didn’t need a touque at that moment and I acquired it from him because it was a perfect fit to use with my small teapot, though it didn’t actually keep the tea all that warm for all that long.
.
.
But luckily I had a very well worn old moth-eaten wool shirt. which I shrank and felted in a very hot wash…
.
.
…so Floradora set to cutting out, and pinning and sewing some bits of the old shirt…
.
.
…and some scraps of batting…
.
.
…which were basted together…
.
.
…and layered with the old felted wool shirt scraps on the outside, the batting in the middle and the random touque on the inside…
.
.
…and then folding the felt over the bottom, she helped stitch it all together!
.
.
We expect that this will be a more functional tea cosy, but it was not very cute…
.
.
…until we added a few more scraps of felt…
.
.
…and now we have matching cosies for the French Press, and the teapot!
.
.
ScrapHappy is a group of bloggers (links below) who post monthly about using up scraps! All genuine scraps are allowed, and any material. Blog posts are published on the 15th of the month – I really love to see what people are doing with bits and pieces saved from the scrap heaps! If you think you’d like to join the group, contact Kate who devised it with a Swedish friend – her blog is the first link below:

So nice 😊
Thank you! We have been wanting a cosier tea cosy for a while – I think this one will do the trick!
They turned out so cute!
Thank you so much! WE have two black cats in the family, it seemed like a fun thing to make two beverage cosies to match!
They’re wonderful and cute! What catches my eye more though this time is that lovely Spartan sewing machine. How do you like it? I like mine.
I really really love my spartan sewing machine! It used to belong to my grandmother, and I learned to sew on it! I love that I just have to oil and brush it, and change the needle when indicated, and it just keeps on going – only forward and backward, but I don’t need it to do any more than that. And almost anything that goes awry with it can be fixed with a screwdriver, not a trip to the electronics store!
Adorable! What a fantastic use of scraps and a random hat!
Thank you! The old felted shirt is thick and warm…the batting is from one of those neverendingly shrinking (but not disappearing) scraps, and the random hat, well it needed a new purpose in life!
Genius, but dammit! In January I donated a hat that I’d struck to child size about 3 years ago that I could have repurposed like this!
Drat!!! Well, you never know, you may well shrink another hat just when you need a new tea cosy…I think it was just the serendipity of timing and materials that made it all work this time for me.
Love it all – the matching cosies will keep an eye on you while working in the kitchen. The sewing machine looks almost the same as my old Singer. And I recognize the Cathi Jefferson tea pot. Are you going out to Fired Up?
The cats do watch me every time I stroll anywhere near the food dishes in the kitchen! The Cathi Jefferson tea pot is our 3 cup pot – we have a larger Cathi one that does for larger human tea parties, and an adorable tiny one that the Hittys like to use at tiny banquets! I looked up the serial number of the Singer Spartan, and it is from 1959, which surprised me, as I thought it was older than that. I do have very fond memories of learning to sew on it with my grandmother. I taught all my kids to sew on it too, and now my granddaughter. I won’t be going to Fired Up this year but some members of my family will be there.
Extreme cosy cuteness! I love that you have matching cosies for tea and coffee. Also, I applaud your son’s taste in beer, I happen to love Kilkenny Cream Ale. Sadly, I can’t get it here…
Thanks! I like that they make me smile when I go into the kitchen (and keep our beverages warm!). My son likes the beer, but wasn’t overly excited by the touque, his standards are high living in a household of knitters!
Very awesome tea cozy!
Thanks! I love that it is cute and keeps the tea much warmer now ❤
Oh you are so very clever!! Functional and hilarious!!! Floradora is quite the seamstress.
I always have a Hitty nearby to help with the fiddly bits, and to encourage me to greater heights (and depths) of silliness and fun!
very clever Kjerstin! And the cat faces are lovely and so appropriate – we all know cats snuggle up in the warmest places!
Beautiful, creative project/art and beautiful Cats, I loved them, Thank you, Love, nia
