Chive collection
The chives have all gone to seed!
.
.
Coriander snipped the stalks…
.
.
…Malarkey stacked them in a bowl…
.
.
…there were a lot of chive seed heads – they were at it for quite a while.
.
.
Then they turned the seed heads upside down and shook them vigourously…
.
.
…so the seeds tumbled out…
.
.
…they got a bowl full of seeds…
.
.
…and a stack of expended stalks…
.
.
The chive seeds (which will be used in cooking) are drying in the warmest corner of the garden along with the Good King Henry seeds (which can be eaten like millet, though I have not yet tried them)!

I didn’t know you could eat chive seeds. I do adding the flowers to salad which is odd because they taste rather like cheese and onion crisps which I don’t like!
I have recipes with onion seeds, and chive seeds would work as a substitute. I have used them in egg salad sandwich filling – yummy!
That sounds a lovely idea – thank you – egg sarnies are amongst my favourites!
Your HIttys are so very resourceful.
They are! And very helpful in the garden.
I didn’t realize I could harvest seeds from my chives like that! I am pretty sure mine have gone to seed also. Thanks to the Hittys for that gardening education 🙂
They are tasty! It’s nice to collect things, and eat them right out of the garden!
I like chive seeds for a delicate oniony flavour; I can’t eat onions without digestive problems, so any good substitute is welcome. That was a good seed harvest, lots of seed for both eating and planting for next year.
Truly – they are a delicate and pretty addition to recipes.
how clever the Quimper human is. I bet they are delicious in egg salad!!
They are!! I just ate some!!
