Bark!
During a December afternoon stroll around our neighbourhood, Constance and Min became interested in the varieties of tree bark. Here Constance is demonstrating how the Arbutus tree bark peels and drops off…
…the bark is pretty, looking like rolled cinnamon sticks but not so fragrant…
…while the bark of the local Garry Oak tree is grey and cubed and mossy.
The fibrous Western Redcedar has long stringy fibres on the outer surface. The inner secondary phloem layer was stripped from the trees and used by local First Nations to make clothing and baskets.
The magnificent Douglas Fir tree has thick fireproof bark with deep furrows…
…some of which are spiderwebby and sappy.
Cherry Bark is a beautiful colour, and has little horizontal clusters of bumps.
The Bark of this Pine has excellent hand and footholds for climbing!
The other kind of barks we encountered were nosier, noisier and bouncier than the trees, but also pretty cute.

Thanks for the nature walk and tree tips.
It was fun looking at the variations in the colour and texture of bark! Arbutus is our favourite, I think.
Ruf ruf! We have such nice bark here on the west coast. Come to Oscar st. and see some birch bark sometime, Hitties!
Oh, good idea! We love birchbark, also useful for making clothing (shoes anyway) and baskets!
What a great stroll and always lovely to take an interest in nature…seems they know their stuff as well!
We just find it interesting, hope we didn’t come across all teacher-y!
Not at all, we enjoyed it!
how instructive. Really enjoy the photos of the different trees. The arbutus bark is really something different.
And of course we love the other kind of barks. We just happen to have that kind right here on the farm.
Constance and Min are very cute in and amongst the trees.
Woof woof, greetings from our barkers to yours!
