Counting May Blossoms

Dogwood

Dogwood

Eugenia and Perdita could hardly help but notice the four large showy bracts on this dogwood tree…

Clematis

Clematis

…and they admired this beautiful clematis Montana, which has a sweet scent and four perfect sepals surrounding each flower…

Hydrangea

Hydrangea

…They liked this delicate version of a Hydrangea with delicate fertile flowers in the middle, and showy but sterile inflorescences around the edge of the flower cluster…

Tree of froth

Tree of froth

…this tree was covered in tiny frothy multiple blossoms, and we couldn’t quite tell whether they were petals or sepals or bracts, or how many were attached to each individual flower.

Rose

Rose

but apparently a Rose usually has five petals (though each petal is divided into two distinct lobes so it seems like more!)

  1. It’s nice to know that there are learned Hittys that we can go to for botanical morphology…lovely photos and education…as well as pretty Hittys.

    • We learn as we go along…The Hittys were interested in all the four-petalled flowers we seemed to see on the way home from work…but upon a little investigation, we discovered they were mostly sepals and bracts!
