Counting May Blossoms
Eugenia and Perdita could hardly help but notice the four large showy bracts on this dogwood tree…
…and they admired this beautiful clematis Montana, which has a sweet scent and four perfect sepals surrounding each flower…
…They liked this delicate version of a Hydrangea with delicate fertile flowers in the middle, and showy but sterile inflorescences around the edge of the flower cluster…
…this tree was covered in tiny frothy multiple blossoms, and we couldn’t quite tell whether they were petals or sepals or bracts, or how many were attached to each individual flower.
but apparently a Rose usually has five petals (though each petal is divided into two distinct lobes so it seems like more!)

It’s nice to know that there are learned Hittys that we can go to for botanical morphology…lovely photos and education…as well as pretty Hittys.
We learn as we go along…The Hittys were interested in all the four-petalled flowers we seemed to see on the way home from work…but upon a little investigation, we discovered they were mostly sepals and bracts!
These photos make my heart sing! Thank you!
You are welcome! We really enjoyed the walk home yesterday!
These are very lovely pictures of Perdita who so difficult to photograph well!
Thank you, she is very fond of green and white flowers – and always tries to find something beautiful in the spring.
oh so pretty..and so informative. The girls are wonderful teachers.
Every time they learn something they are inspired to pass it along! Thank you so much, we can’t help photographing Hittys with flowers!
So beautiful! These two are just stunning!
Thank you very much – I am very fond of these girls.
