Spalted Chestnut
The Quimper Hitty human has a very good friend who appeared to be immune to Hittys. However, another friend of that friend acquired a new lathe, and was looking for projects. I gave my friend, and she gave her other friend an approximate profile of an uncarved Hitty blank, and a couple of weeks later a basket of goodies arrived at the Hitty cupboard.

We were most astonished and delighted at the sweet and beautiful little salad bowls, a gift from the wood-turner – Thank You!

…and Eugenia was overcome at the thought of potential friends arriving in the cupboard. As soon as the human has a few uninterrupted moments she will begin to search for the dollies in the wood!
The tree that this wood came from is a Horse Chestnut tree, a branch of which was overhanging the garden of our friend. She was happy to have the branch removed before it fell into her asparagus bed. Our friend’s friend is apparently happy to have found a new way to exercise the lathe – and we are happy to have found a person who was willing to venture turning a doll blank!

Beautiful! But please use care in carving and sanding. The spalting isn’t healthy for the Human’s lungs! I can hardly wait to see who comes forth!
I have taken to wearing a mask while sanding – I should be ok!
Cute Bowls!
They are so nice, aren’t they? I was so pleased and surprised to get them along with the blanks, and the Hittys are happy to have a means of eating salad at last!!
How exciting for Eugenia to know that a new brother or sister is in the making…so to speak. The wood is beautiful. A very exciting and thoughtful gift. Immune to Hittys? Poppycock! The wee turned bowls are lovely.
Eugenia is spalted too, so she is looking forward to friends with grain!
Swoon! I am in love with the dishes AND the turned blanks!!!! Absolutely magical! I am looking so forward to seeing who is living inside them! 🙂
Me too – I want to start carving right this minute, but alas, I have to wait a wee while till I have a chunk of time and a clear space to work in!
What a fun project for you…and what a thoughtful gift from that friend of a friend.
It will be fun! My friend has no idea what she has contributed to – the friend of my friend apparently ordered “Hitty” from a bookstore and I fear is on the way to being hooked!
oh goodness what a grand surprise..Happy to hear that your friend of a friend might be a new convert to HIttyism!
Love those bowls and can’t wait to see the new family members.
It really was grand! I am itching to get started!
wow. beautiful wood and exciting prospect of growing the Hitty family. I didn’t know they started like that. thanks for sharing.
This is one version of a blank…I have used sawn blanks too, for instance Tuesday and Dulcie are carved starting with a sawn blank.!
Beautiful bows, and wood! Please use mask when sanding this wood. Wonderful gifts for friend of friend!
Thank you, Fung! I will use a mask!
