Stripes 2!
Constance and I were excited to hear from my weaving friend…
.
.
…because she has woven the second to last tea towel on the striped warp, and invited us to weave the last one!
.
.
Constance helped wind bobbins with fuchsia and brown cotton. We liked the stripey tea towel we made at the beginning of the month so we are making another one using the same pattern, though the colours will give it more contrast than the orange and pink of the first one!
.
.
It looks a lot different!
.
.
Here is the very end of a long warp, just coming around the back beam. Every once in a while a warp broke because at the very end the tension can be erratic…
.
.
When that happens, all is not lost! You just have to grab the end and tie it to something heavy to give it enough tension in the weaving…Constance tried to help but she wasn’t heavy enough.
.
.
…we used a couple of half used cones of cotton.
.
.
The end of the warp also means that the shed (space between the warps) gets smaller…to compensate for that sometimes we threw the boat shuttle with more force, but once in a while we threw too hard, didn’t catch it at the end of the shuttle race, and it ended up in the box of roll ends.
.
.
We had to decide whether to try and eke out one more pattern repeat but decided that the idea of constantly fixing broken warps and an increasingly tight shed to throw the shuttles through was not worth the aggravation…
.
.
…so we wove a fucsia hem and called it the end. This tea towel will be about six inches shorter than the first one…
.
.
…but it looks pretty good!
.
.
…Do you have a favourite?!
Thanks to our friend for letting us make a couple of lovely tea towels on her loom!
.
Wow! Beautiful weave! Its colours too. Lovely team working. Thank you, Love, nia
Thank you nia, we love the rhythm of the weaving, and it is fun to weave the last one on the loom! Cutting it off seems so drastic!
I like the second one best but of course they’re both lovely. It must be so satisfying for you and Constance to be at home, tending to homey happenings there, glance at your woven towels and steep in the memories of making them together. I’m sure you treasure your friend’s gift of sharing her loom with you on those occasions. Thanks for sharing those times with us too!
I do like to see the hand woven towels in my house, and these will be beauties! Usually I end up using them as hand towels in the bathroom, they really brighten up the space and are pleasant to use.
They are both glorious! I am sure that they will both bring great pleasure for years to come!
They will give me pleasure for sure. There is something very satisfying in making cloth from string!
Oh, yes! Playing with string has been my lifelong joy! <3 Thank you for all the wonderful ways that you play with string, too! I fell in love with your Stripes shawl and went to Ravelry and downloaded the pattern. I am now blissfully knitting one up for myself in a lovely combination of upcycled yarns.
I cannot pick a favorite – all are beautiful!
I used to have loom many years ago, but I had to sell it when I fell on hard times. When I see your loom, I fervently wish I still the one that was once mine.
All my weaving lately has been on a friend’s loom…she is generous with her space, time and materials!
Thats a great friend!
I love them both! Such fun colours
I love them too – the first one for its subtlety and the second one for its contrast!
love it all, Constance looks like the perfect weaver’s helper but I don’t think she should try to be a weight on loose warp threads. Tea towels are great, wonderful colours.
Thanks very much, approval from an expert is much appreciated!! Constance was willing to hang out there for a while, but she is too light to be of any use as an improvised weight!
Love the tea towel colours, but Constance’s Salzburg stripe dress is gorgeous too!
wonderful colors….I find weaving such a magical thing!! Quite beyond my powers of comprehension but so admiring.
We just love playing with string! perhaps we are part cat…?
Amazing colorful textile on the loom!
Colourwork is so fascinating – we are amazed every time!
