Gooseberry harvest
Jane organised aprons for Vanilla and Coriander…
.
.
…she found them each a little pail…
.
.
.
…and they put on their hats!
.
.
Young human helped harvest the gooseberry crop with the Hittys…
.
.
.
…there were as many spines as on a hedgehog…
.
.
…and quite a few berries!
.
.
We picked every single one that we could find!!
.
.
Coriander found some ripe ones…
.
.
…and not-so-ripe ones…
.
.
…and Vanilla found both on one branch…
.
.
…and a seven-berry branch!
.
.
All the girls worked hard…
.
.
…Jane was full of joy at the plentiful crop!
.
.
As beautiful as beads on a necklace, our entire gooseberry crop was 122 grams. Not a huge amount, but it will make a couple little pots of jam!

I like e gooseberries
We like them too!
I lost my gooseberry bush last year.
That’s a pity – they can take a long time to nurture to fruitfulness.
It’s true. Mine was just beginning to bear and then the pipes from our house to the street went and in digging them up the workmen dug up a lot of the garden they were in and I had to start from scratch.
Lovely and delicious! Our gooseberry bush is struggling. The deer like to nibble at it, despite the thorns.
Those dratted deer! Luckily our berry bushes are all in the fenced back yard where the deer can’t get in!
What fun that so many, wooden and human, got to participate in gooseberry picking this year. They seemed to have offered varied ways of viewing their usefulness and fruitfulness.
We still hope for a crop big enough to make a gooseberry tart – this year was the best year yet, but still not enough for that! Maybe next year…
Not a big fan of gooseberries but I am a huge fan of the Quimper Hittys and the youngest Quimper human. Hope the jam turns out yummy
Jam-time soon! We’ll let you know!
Ah, time for my annual gooseberry-envy session. They look like beautiful agate and carnelian beads.
I wish there were more gooseberries available in the shops, but they seem not to be a popular fruit around here. But at least it is possible to grow them in this climate. Hopefully you can at least get Gooseberry Jam in Australia?!
Looks like a lovely and productive outing. Nice they had a young human there to help out the Hittys 🙂
Nobody liked getting scratched by the thorns, but everyone likes the jam!
