Donkey Riding!
Have you ever been to Quebec, Stowing timbers on the deck…
.
.
…Seen the king with a golden crown,
.
.
…riding on a Donkey!!!
.
.
Hey! Ho! Away we go, donkey riding, donkey riding,
Hey! Ho! Away we go, riding on a donkey!
.
.
Have you ever been to Cape Horn, Where it’s always fine and warm
Seen the Lion and the Unicorn Riding on a Donkey?
.
.
Have you ever been to Cardiff Bay, Where the folks all Shout Hooray!
Here comes John with his three year’s pay, Riding on a Donkey?
.
.
Hey! Ho! Away we go, donkey riding, donkey riding,
Hey! Ho! Away we go, riding on a donkey!
.
.
The Quimper Hittys acquired a new pet – all the way from near Cardiff Bay, and Hey! Ho! Away they go…
.
.
Thanks so much to our friend Sue in Wales, who sent us this delightful new addition to the Quimper Hitty Stable!
.
Click Here if you want to hear the song in a version by Canadian band Great Big Sea, and since it’s a folk song, lyrics change, and these are slightly different to the ones I learned as an eight-year-old!

Friend Sue has sparked a very fun narrative today. I’m going to go listen to this new song to me right now….thanks so much for this cheery fun today.
You are welcome! We were very amused to extricate this little guy from his wrappings and introduce him to the Hitty cupboard (and stable!)
I remember this from my childhood, but not all the verses, just the chorus. What a wonderful way to be reminded of a good time. And what a nice donkey!
It is a very catchy ditty!! The Hittys are all chirping it merrily right this very moment, and the donkey seems pleased to have an entire song about him!
Awesome Hitty adventures 🙂
I love the band Great Big Sea (from Newfoundland I believe) and I’ve seen them in concert several times as well as the former lead singer Alan Doyle who came to Denver a couple years ago (we got to see him in a small venue and his solo show was awesome!)
Lucky you to have heard Great Big Sea live!!! They were a great band, and much loved by Canadians. I haven’t seen Alan Doyle solo…usually tickets are sold out instantly around here!
I have a wonderful DVD of their live performance in Newfoundland. Watching the DVD you could definitely tell they were beloved! Séan McCann formerly of GBS came to Denver in December 2024 and we had tickets to see him but something came up and we couldn’t go to the show.
obviously I had a culturally deprived childhood and have never heard of this song. Enjoyed hering it from the Great Big Sea group…how fun. I loved the Hittys depiction and their adorable donkey. Thank you for a lovely Saturday adventure.
Well, it is a Canadian folk song! I am sure there are many songs from your part of the world that are unfamiliar to us northerners! We love our new donkey!
I loved this song as a kid, going to teach it to the Happy Gang – but I didn’t remember all the verses. The donkey is cute and your pictures are wonderful.
Thanks! I bet the Happy Gang will love it and sing it incessantly!!
I recognised the chorus but didn’t know the song! I am so glad the Hittys are enjoying the donkey and that he is roughly the right scale! May they have loads of fun together.
They will!
Diolch i chi, ffrind! The Hittys think he is perfect!
All your vignettes are brilliant but I ADORE this one with the donkey!
Thanks! We will have such fun with a donkey in the Hitty stable!
