Apple Pip in January
Little flocks of Bushtits are Pip’s favourite winter visitors to the apple tree.
We’ve also seen Juncos, sparrows of various kinds, Nuthatches, and the occasional Downy Woodpecker…the suet block is inside a second cage to protect it from being gobbled by starlings, crows, flickers and squirrels.

Double cage–what a good idea. I get frustrated when the big birds get to mine and peck it to death. Seeds fly all over the place although eventually birds or squirrels eat it all!
This system works for us (and the little birds).
What a great idea for the little birds outside. So nice of Pip to help them during the freezing winter months.
The Bushtits do seem grateful, but occasionally raid the hummingbird feeder!
I sure like bushtits. I expect that Min gets quite excited to see them on the feeder too! It is nice that Pip is accepted by them as just another occupant of the apple tree, and not some competition to be pecked into submission.
Min has been asleep in bed…dreaming of Yule Lads. Pip didn’t spend too long out there – The bigger birds have bigger beaks, she was glad to avoid the woodpecker!
Busy little spot! Cute little feather-friends there! 🙂
Yes, the cat also thinks it is a great sport – sitting on the window-ledge chattering at the birds.
