Apple Pip in January

Pip studies Bushtit feeding behaviour

Bushtits visiting the Apple Tree.

Little flocks of Bushtits are Pip’s favourite winter visitors to the apple tree.

We’ve also seen Juncos, sparrows of various kinds, Nuthatches, and the occasional Downy Woodpecker…the suet block is inside a second cage to protect it from being gobbled by starlings, crows, flickers and squirrels.

  1. Double cage–what a good idea. I get frustrated when the big birds get to mine and peck it to death. Seeds fly all over the place although eventually birds or squirrels eat it all!

  2. I sure like bushtits. I expect that Min gets quite excited to see them on the feeder too! It is nice that Pip is accepted by them as just another occupant of the apple tree, and not some competition to be pecked into submission.
