On an extremely wet afternoon several Hittys pushed off from the submerged jetty…

…and rowed off across the backyard.

Puddles
Min, Willa, Arianell, Tipsy, and Viola accompanied Gráinne and Jane into the soggy beyond…

Soggy
…the puddles were enormous and deep…

Rowing
…they all did their best to row in unison!

Sharp and Shiny
Gráinne was put ashore at the leeky part of the garden…

waiting
…and as the rest of the crew waited patiently…

Vanquished foes
…she vanquished the leeks with her trusty cutlass.

Loaded up
Then they loaded up the dory…

Balanced
…carefully balanced the leeks…

Row
…and rowed home to the Hitty Cupboard…

…where Jane made a vat of leek and potato soup for them all.

We are a little past Leek season here too, but we left these last three in the ground so we could make our St David’s Day soup with our own leeks!
Yes, this is quite the soupy story! I was so glad to see that Jane got to go along on this vanquishing adventure. No doubt they all enjoyed the fruits of their varied labors in that ~sounds like such a great recipe ~ soup ending. Pulling together to make a lovely meal can be so rewarding. I so enjoyed the story today *as always*!
Jane rarely goes out of the kitchen, her joints are rather stiff and inflexible, but she wanted to be there for the Leek Adventure to supervise the collection! She is in favour of people knowing the effort it takes to make food!
A delightful story, wonderfully illustrated! At first glance at the second picture, I thought two passengers had fallen off the boat!
In Hitty scale, those “leeks” do look like leeks. But in reality, are they scallions?
No-one fell off this time thankfully. The Hittys have learned how important it is to balance things in the tippy dory! The real leeks are real leeks from our garden…I bought the Hitty leeks in an artisanal market in Bogotá, Colombia!
Kjerstin, this story was over the top wonderful. I know the effort it took to keep the woodens in the boat and not tip over was epic. Gráinne with the leaks was hilarious. The way you have of storytelling is such a gift…and we all get to enjoy it.
The Hittys are getting much better at keeping their dory upright – it is a matter of ballast, centre of gravity and balancing the cargo…and rowing in unison! Gráinne keeps her cutlass polished and sharp, and is ready to make use of it at any opportunity!

We all love the dory – and this has been a very soggy stormy winter, a bit of a trial except for the opportunities to row around the lawn!
