Broken Buddleia
Last night a deer broke off half our Butterfly bush…
.
.
…by trampling down some of the Shasta Daisies and then either standing against the trunk, or giving it a mighty yank with its teeth.
.
.
With the vanquished plant lying on the ground it nibbled a few leaves and then wandered off. Blueberry was very interested in the vegetable carnage!
.
.
The broken branches will go to the municipal compost…
.
.
…but the lovely flowers went into a large jar of water!

I’m so sorry for the half loss of your Buddleia bush. What a challenge! But, you’ve made the most of the loss-a bouquet and composting.
We were a little miffed about the damage, but it’s very true that the bouquet is a compensation. We don’t normally pick the Buddleia flowers!
oh, those darn deer! Thank goodness they can’t get into the back garden. I think their preferred vegetation is becoming scarce in the heat and lack of water.
I think that’s so…I also think I’d be less grumpy about it if they had eaten more of it instead of just a few nibbles on a few leaves. Still I guess that is not the habit of browsers, and being grumpy doesn’t really change the situation, so…compost and bouquet it is!
you are right – grumpy doesn’t help. Why can’t they eat grass and weeds??
ohhh deer can be such a garden pest! however it did make a gorgeous bouquet.
wonder what Blueberry was thinking? perhaps imaging herself hunting that pesky deer!
I think Blueberry was imagining himself as a mighty Jaguar!
Oh, so sad, and it was such a beautiful deep purple, too. I hope the surviving half will fight back to bloom another day. Obviously a deer of obnoxiously elevated tastes…
We love that deep purple! Obviously the deer did too! Sigh.
Maybe the deer got it tangled in his horns and did it by mistake.
Natural antler-pruning! It could have been, or perhaps it was a doe, getting her fawns the best stuff. Luckily there is another big stem so I think the bush will be fine.
