A Two-Hanky Princess Dress
The Quimper Hitty human went on a sewing jag this morning, with the intention of making a new Hitty gown out of two items from the Box of Treasure…a Swiss cotton Hanky with machine-embroidered pink carnations, and a pretty pale pink linen Hanky with scalloped edging.
The bodice pattern is placed on the bias to capture a whole carnation flower, and cut out. Then the cut out piece is placed upside down on a plain part of the hanky on the straight grain. Then the back opening/neck edge is stitched. This edge is trimmed, and turned, so the carnation is right side out. the raw edges are tacked together, and only then the lining piece cut out.

The sleeves are cut out of the corners of the pink linen Hanky.
.
.
The sleeves are stitched to the bodice, and Rose helps Constance try it on.
.
.
Half of each hanky was used to make the skirt.

Constance says very diplomatically that it is a very pretty dress indeed (but is privately thinking it is perhaps somewhat more suitable for a younger Hitty going through a pink princess phase)

Wow! I have got to learn to make hanky dresses!
It is fun to imagine the Hanky re-mix possibilities!
What a lovely dress. I have a huge stash of Hanky’s but I’m so scared to cut them…. You give me some courage.
Thanks! I am glad you like the dress – I had a lot of fun making it. Hopefully you can try a little Hanky-tailoring on an expendable one ..can’t wait to see what you do with your huge stash!
Has Constance had her pink princess stage yet? She looks very lovely in her new gown which is beautifully tailored.
Constance was never a pink princess – but she may harbour very small secret desires to dress up as one occasionally…
Thank you for the ideas and the tutorial. Constance looks lovely but one can see that she does feel a tad self conscious in this ensemble. Altho she looks like one of her beloved Opera heroines!!
An Opera heroine – that’s what she is, thanks for that insight. Now she can be a pink princess without embarrassment!
These are wonderful, such beautiful dresses and very inspiring to see what you can do with a hanky! Love that you showed the process as well.
Thanks very much. The gift of the box of Treasure – including many Hankies – is what inspired me to try these things.
