Stollen Day 2023
The humans made a giant Stollen to help the Quimper Hittys celebrate Stollen day…
…the Hittys helped sprinkle powdered sugar on to the melted-butter-slathered loaf.
.
.
The celebration takes place in Dresden in remembrance of the Butter Proclamation of 1491 in which the pope decreed that the bakers of the city could use butter instead of oil in their Christmas baking.
.
.
This is the first time I have made my own Stollen. I had the willing and enthusiastic help of the youngest human in the family and a trio of Hittys.
.
.
Our oven has been acting up, so we had to do a few adjustments mid-bake…but…
.
.
…the end result was pretty good, according to the humans…
.
.
…and the Hittys!
.
.
This is our recipe – given to us by a very nice German student of mine…not a genuine Dresdener Criststollen but pretty good, everyone agrees!

I had no idea there was a specific Stollen Day! There were some home made ones on sale at the C&M Christmas Market yesterday but one lasts too long for me living alone. Yours looks lovely.
There are some interesting days and ways to celebrate…the Quimper Hittys gravitate to the ones that involve delicious food! Our first Stollen was pretty good, thanks!
Thanks for the recipe!
Goodness that looks so tasty….with a cup of tea..!! A friend once told me regarding an especially tasty desert she had been served…when describing it she said ‘Oh it is what they will feed us in heaven!” I think your stollen might be on that menu!
The photos of the stollen, the comraderie of making it together with the Hittys and Youngest Human, and the clear recipe present the Christmas time holiday so nicely packaged in your story. This is the part that intrigued me most: “The celebration takes place in Dresden in remembrance of the Butter Proclamation of 1491 in which the pope decreed that the bakers of the city could use butter instead of oil in their Christmas baking.” Thank you for bringing yet another celebratory day to our awareness. Ever think of writing out a calendar of celebration days? You help make life most pleasant for the Müttersholtz Hittys and myself with your narratives and remarkable photos. Many thanks once again. You are so welcome! I try and record the celebrations in my next year’s diary…some of the special days I haven’t gotten around to marking yet – like the Burryman festival, which the Hittys and Mungo are keen for me to mark…one of these years!
The Burryman Festival sounds quite interesting! We have so much burdock around here and get so covered with them ourselves as well as the animals, that I’ll remember that when we come back with those heavy duty stickers!
I adore stollen
So do we!!! And we love butter, so being “allowed” to use butter is a great reason to celebrate – eh?
The pope being reasonable is another!
the girls looked very satisfied – enjoy.
Their little corners of stollen (each with a little bit of marzipan) were very filling!
Beautiful they are, Thank you for the recipe too. Love, nia
Thank you nia, and so delicious!
But where is the marzipan in the recipe…? It just isn’t stollen without.
I agree, and we added a log of marzipan anyway!
Perfect!
