The longest night 2023
I wrote a winter sonnet for the shortest day, the longest night…

A Winter Sonnet
As coruscating evening gathers round
and chilly shadows lengthen in the night
the muffled foggy glow and whispered sound
becomes a sadness in the fading light.
One bitter night of frost and quiet cold
while lonely paths crept by the leafless trees
the sheep stood huddled in their chilly fold
and shepherds turned in wonder to the East…
where constellations filled the sparkling sky
and music shimmered down from near and far
to pierce their hearts; and longingly they cried
for hope and peace and promise from a star.
On darkened winter nights when hope grows dim,
light candles and invite the starlight in.

Happy Solstice!
Thank you very much – we find it very heartening to know that the sunlight is increasing, these winter nights are so dark!
I am in awe of your deeply thoughtful and well written sonnet. The photo of Constance so appropriately goes with it. Thank you for these gifts. Becky J
I hadn’t written a sonnet in 40 years, but the words wanted to be written this year! Thank you so much.
Happy Solstice!
Thank you! ❤ to you too!
Happy Solstice! Beautiful sonet… and photograph. Thank you, Love, nia
Thank you so much, a little more will come light every day now – and maybe hope peace and promise too…
OH, so beautiful- thank you Kjerstin. Wishing you and yours all sweet blessings now and always! ❤
Thank you Tottie – we are lighting candles for remembrance and hope and are so glad the light is coming back.
Just lovely! Our Christmas will not be in the least cold, but we can definitely relate to the constellations sparkling brightly in the night sky; we have the *best* view of the Milky Way down here. May your Christmas be filled with peace, good cheer and friendship.
I was born in the southern hemisphere, and whenever I dip below the equator I think – yes! the stars are in the right places again! Thanks for the good wishes – we wish the same to you and yours!
what a lovely sonnet and photo thank you
You are welcome! We find lighting little candles does help keep the darkness at bay!
