Tansy goes down to The Forks
The Forks (of the Red River and Assiniboine River) is a big deal in Winnipeg. This is a fun place to take a tourist any time of the year because walking along the river is always fun, unless it is flooded and underwater. BUT! It is winter so Tansy can actually walk ON the rivers.
Zamboni Prepares the Skating Rink
This week they had the curling rinks up, and preparations for Festival du Voyageur were wrapping up. Tansy couldn’t walk down to the actual forks (which is nicer in the summer),
Sky Box Warming Hut
but still, for the past many years there has been a contest to build “warming huts” that are placed on the river for skaters and visitors to use….

And a new one called the sky box invited visitors to talk to new people and take a picture in the mirrored wall.

Tansy was very excited to meet a delightful young woman who took a photo of the two of them bundled up. Pretty much everyone wears a scarf pulled up over their nose when walking on the river to fight the cold, so it is nice to find a place to stay warm for a bit.
As restorative as tea
Here is a nice photo taken on the Assiniboine river – Tansy declares that Red mittens from Nunavut are nearly as warming as tea !

Thirty-two years ago in January, my (nearly) fiancé (now husband) and I walked on a frozen river in the Chicago area. The outside temps were -40 degrees, with wind chill it was -80 degrees F. It was a time to remember. This is bringing back memories. Nice to see Tansy is well protected.
Sounds like lovely memories within despite the chilly atmosphere without!
Glad to see she is well wrapped up. Lovely that she got to go out though and see The Forks – it looks lovely, although VERY cold!

I must confess that the warming hut did not look very warming!! I had to pause this blog post and go get a hot cup of tea so I could continue!! I am so happy that Tansy is having great fun, I am sure her little pegs are nearly frozen!
I wondered about that too – as the warming hut has no source of heat or roof! Perhaps it works because it is out of the wind, and perhaps when the sun is out it reflects off the mirror and warms it up a bit? I am not familiar with cold weather community mores.
It is cold out there ! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! Tansy looks warm and enjoying herself. She definately needs to wear those mittens to keep her little hands warm as well.
She is so glad that the coat came with mitts!
Brrrr. I hope Tansy’s joints are not getting so loose that she loses parts.
Never fear, I believe warming cups of tea are regularly administered, and in any case Tansy is staying with a trusty conservator who could fix wooden joints if she needed to.
