Boring Beetle
Constance was peacefully minding her own business when this spectacular long-horned beetle strolled across the yard…

If camouflage is the reason for the amazing colour scheme, then it needs to get away from the dandelions in the driveway!
…we looked it up as soon as we got inside and found out it was Rosalia funebris, the Banded Alder Borer, but it is the least boring insect we have seen in a long time!!! Isn’t Nature just amazing!

Spectacular!
We haven’t seen that in our Northwest yard. I expect the nearby alder trees are happy about that.
Its range includes your backyard too! Western North America Alaska to Mexico according to the guide, but this is the first one I remember ever seeing! The larvae eat fallen alder, so I think your upright trees are OK!
oh, aren’t you lucky. I’ve never seen one either. Constance was very brave to get so close as it is a wood borer!
Luckily she isn’t made of rotten Alder, but it has to be said that she didn’t know about the predilections of it’s larvae either when she first saw it!
Wow! Nature is truly amazing! How lucky that Constance was out and about when this beauty strolled past!
And so lucky that she spotted it too – it was very shy and retiring and tried to stay under the dandelion leaves!
Yes, the creatures of nature are truly amazing! Thanks for sharing.
We were most impressed with this beetle’s matching carapace and antennae!
Great photos of Constance and her new “friend”. Have never seen one like this. We have a LOT of bugs in Mo. but not that one….at least as far as we know. Thanks for sharing.
The insect world is amazing! We wish there were fireflies here, but there aren’t any!
What a great insect! I love looking the different insects found up as well.
We were so intrigued, having never seen one before, they must be very retiring usually!
