Oak Fox
The fierce winds this fall have been wreaking havoc on the trees around here…some have been ripped out by their roots, and others cracked in half. The trees that fall across roads and power lines are removed, but the ones in the park are left in place…
…and labelled. Carrot Soup is hoping to spot some wildlife feeding, sheltering or nesting, but the animals seem a little shy…
…she peered and poked and prodded, but the puddle at the base of the tree throw didn’t appear to have any fish in it.
She explored the ferns into which the oak tree crashed, but did not spot any wildlife (though she did have the feeling that she was being followed).
The cracks and splinters inside a hollow of the broken oak were examined carefully…
…and at last the little vulpine decided Carrot Soup looked trustworthy, and it told her a sad story of how it lost its fox hole when the oak tree fell over.
Carrot Soup scooped up the fox, and brought it home with her, saying that she knew another little being affected by the loss of a tree…

I love this story, and I love the saving and labeling of the downed trees. What a great idea!
Thank you! We think the wildlife tree idea is great too!
Sweet…and very nice to know that there are those in power who will leave downed trees for those things named on the label.
Yes, this is in a wilderness-y part of the park and it makes lots of sense to encourage the wildlife by letting the tree alone.
lovely story, Pip and Fox look like perfect friends. That tree didn’t have a very extensive root system, it makes a good shelter for critters this winter and Fox seems to have found a new home.
The roots weren’t very wide, but they were deeper than I thought they’d be. Little Fox is happy in the Hitty Cupboard though we may encourage him to scamper off when spring comes.
What a marvelous way to help out Mother Nature and her little ones in the outdoors! Thank you, Carrot Soup for showing us the wonderful tale of the fallen tree!
The mighty oak provides a service even now. It is nice to see it appreciated for all the good things it can do, not just as a standing up tree. Then it provided shade, and safety for the higher-up birds, now the lower down birds and animals will have shelter!
Ooooooh! Gulp! Sniffle!
What a wonderful story! What an excruciatingly cute little fox!
I’m so pleased for Pip and the little fox.

I am pleased you like the little tale the fox, and Pip is very happy with a sympathetic friend. They are both going to enjoy having a confederate in the scampering department…
Awww…. utterly enchanting!
Thank you! We are happy that the little fox is somewhere safe and friendly, and Pip is happy too!
how charming… and how adorable to see that wee fox with your little Pip. Carrot Soup is such a good big sister, great photos
Fox and Pip are happy so Carrot Soup is happy too!
How sweet of Carrot Soup to take Fox back with her. Fox may have lost his hole in the tree, but is lucky to be welcomed into the Quimper hitty household
I think fox will be busy, amusing and being amused by Pip!
An absolutely charming story 🙂 And Carrot Soup is perfect for the role – she is such a cheerful girl.
She has a kind heart, and generous nature…fox was right to trust her.
Beautiful
Thank you!
