A New Old Book
What to do now the rainy season is here? Time to find indoor amusements.
Constance likes to read, and finds the familiar stories of Beatrix Potter both amusing and a good escape from the weather. Beatrix Potter was born 150 years ago this year, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit was her first published book (1902).
Beatrix Potter insisted on making the books small, so that children would like to hold them in their own hands. Gilly likes the extra small size of this book!
What an amazingly delightful surprise to discover a never-before-published Beatrix Potter Tale! The manuscript dates to 1914 and was recently found languishing in the Victoria and Albert Museum, though Beatrix Potter only completed one sketch for the story.
It has finally been released, with illustrations by Quentin Blake! The Hittys loved the story of the adventurous black kitty-cat – such a demure Kitty during the daytime, but off prowling and poaching at night as Miss Catherine St. Quintin, in her handsome boots and Norfolk Jacket.
She has exciting adventures, and meets familiar characters… and drinks restorative cups of tea with her friends at the end of the tale, which inspired the Hittys to do the same…
…but without the mice and rats.

Beatrix was one of a kind…what a treat on a gloomy rainy day! The tale of the two bad mice brings back beautiful memories of a very special dollhouse! Thank you for bringing it back to mind!
Ah yes, we love the Two Bad Mice! I believe the dollhouse which is illustrated in that tale also resides at the Victoria and Albert Museum! Would it be fun to visit!
I have dearly loved Beatrix Potter all my life, so I am delighted to learn of this new book- Thank you. And, I LOVE your flower teacup! How charming!
Isn’t it amazing to have a new Beatrix Potter story? The bookstore I ordered it from didn’t even know about it, they asked in amazement did I really mean a new Beatrix Potter?
I will be ordering it, too! Thank you so much!
This is an absolutely charming chapter in the lives of the Quimper Hittys! What a great way to start my day!
Thanks very much! The Quimper Hittys thought it was a great way to start a rainy day too!
Yes, lovely, lovely…and thanks so much for letting us know about this recently unknown book by a beloved author.
You are so welcome! We were just thrilled to see there was actually a new book coming out, and Quentin Blake is a great illustrator – with his own unique flavour!
many more rainy days to come, happy reading and tea drinking to all the Hittys. How exciting to find a new Beatrix Potter story.
It was exciting! More time for cups of tea and book-reading is a good thing!
one of my favorite authors and illustrators, Ms Potter. How lovely that a new book has been issued. Your photos and your girls are so charming. A bit rainy here also so I think I shall settle down with a book and cup of tea. You are inspirational!
We think that tea and book-reading is one of the best things about stormy fall weather, and it was just delightful to have a new book by a beloved author to read!
What an unexpected surprise…it’s nothing less than finding buried treasure…and the best part of it is that everyone gets to enjoy this treasure.
A treasure indeed! We just squealed out loud when we found that a new story was being published, and even better – it was every bit as fabulous as we had hoped (except for not being small format)!
