Ten Thousand seven hundred years!
But there is evidence that people have lived here for many thousands of years! On a beach, Tansy showed Constance the archaeological site she worked on a few years ago…

Prepared Clam Garden
And here is a clam garden, part of an extensive fishing and gathering complex prepared and maintained by people who lived here one or two thousand years ago…

Fish Trap Stakes
…the estuaries and creeks have stakes in them – remnants of fish traps which were probably used and repaired for hundreds of years!

SGang Gwaay
People lived in villages like SGaang Gwaay up until about a hundred and fifty years ago…

Captain Russ and Watchman, Walter
…and we met the Haida Gwaii Watchmen who live at the ancient sites, looking after them and teaching visitors about the ways of their ancestors who lived there before.

Sisters
Tansy was happy her sisters could come along on this trip, to experience the depths of the beauty and history of the land and people. It is hard to convey – we all feel changed forever!

Nice to see the favored photographer and more historical notes and photos of this special place that part of the QH household and QH human got to visit.
We are glad to have visited! Such a treat to go with the Experts, and see the world in more depth – it changes everything!
Viewing all this beauty, I can’t help but notice that life in the frenzied present has paid a large price…exchanging the close connection humans had to one another, family and nature in exchange for a connection to technology.
We spent a week without internet, or phones and survived! Didn’t even miss it!
I am so impressed by the watchmen program. And seeing the artifacts of the life lived on these islands. Thank you and the “favorite” photographer for sharing with us.
The watchmen are so committed and knowledgeable – it was really the best way to visit these ancient villages, and gave us a very great appreciation and some understanding of the people who have been living there for millennia. I am so grateful to have been able to be there briefly and with a group of people dedicated to making as small an impact as possible.
Absent the ponytail (due to “maturity”), the Wiregrass Hitties have a remarkably similar favorite in their lives…
The ponytail appeared when our favourite stopped being a civil servant…he is no longer required to be civilised nor servile, and feels much better for it!
