Mole Day 2025
October 23 is Mole Day, which the Quimper Hittys are celebrating from exactly 6:02 am till 6:02 pm.
.
.
Henrietta’s chemistry exploits are taking place in the kitchen – did you know that acid inhibits oxidation on fruit?! This is why you sprinkle lemon or orange juice (citric acid) onto avocados!
.
.
Heat speeds up and alters chemical reactions – for example denaturing the protein in an egg and changing it from a liquid to a solid!
.
.
Baking Powder in French is “Chemical Raising Agent”…
.
.
…if you don’t use a raising agent in your baking you get flatbread…
.
.
…but if you do use it, you get a fluffy cake!
.
.
James James likes the fluffy cake part of chemistry!!
.
.
Jane is a bit worried about chemistry experimentation and is standing by the water barrel in case anything explodes.
Happy Mole Day to all our Chemistry Friends!

The things I learn from this blog…I will now pay attention to Oct 23rd and try an experiment or two.
;D
We like Science! Henrietta is particularly keen on showing people that chemistry can be an every day occurrence!
I tend to agree with James James in this case and I’d stand by Jane with a fire extinguisher in hand. Happy Mole Day, is there a reason for the 6:02 timing?
6:02 on October 23 is related to Avogadro’s number (6.02 x 10 to the 23rd) which is known in Chemistry as a “mole”. You might have to get Henrietta to explain it to you! The rest of us just nod and agree with her, but she actually knows her chemistry!
I was wondering about the precision of the timing too! happy Mole Day. As a one time science teacher I really out to remember that date – but chemistry was my least favourite bit unless it was biochemistry (biology and maths were my subjects really) unless I could entertain my classes with the fun bits like bangs and fizzing!
The Quimper Hittys love Math too and always celebrate Pi day in March! In fact they like any commemorative day that can be celebrated with delicious food! See my answer to onesmallstitch for the reason for the 6:02 timing!
and there was me, thiinking by mole, you meant the cute black creature that tunnels underground ^^
Well, we celebrate moles too, our favourite mole being Moley, friend of Ratty in the Wind in the Willows!
what an instructional presentation by the Quimper HIttys (and James James) I do admire Jane’s practical nature!!
Jane is always ready to clear up after kitchen experiments, though Henrietta is pretty good about keeping her glassware clean to prevent cross-contamination and unintended consequences.
Another thing learnt! Thank you
You are welcome. we are always glad to have you joining in our fun!
What a delightful post with food education!
