St Brigid’s Day

Shepherdess

February 1 is St Brigid’s Day, a holiday in Ireland, and also the Celtic festival of Imbolc, the harbinger of spring…

Spring

…which is why St Brigid is sometimes portrayed as a shepherdess, with lambs and calves. Arianell knows she doesn’t look much like a 5th century Irish girl but it’s a great excuse to wear her 18th century Shepherdess outfit!

St Brigid’s cross

And she did make a St Brigid’s cross  out of straw! We tacked it over our doorway to show Spring she was welcome into our home!

St Brigid is famous for her expanding cloak… Click here for a sweet little song that tells that story!

  1. You enrich us with these narratives…and Brigid’s wee small cloak-I so enjoyed listening to the ladies singing it. Now, Arianell’s cloak will mean much more to me. Thank you once again for sharing this lovely story.
