Passing Cloud – Bog
Tansy has been to Haida Gwaii with our favourite photographer several times, always bringing home tales of wonder and adventure!
It was a special treat for her to have some of her sisters along on the Passing Cloud so she could visit and share some of her favourite special places…
…but this evening we went to a special place that was new even to Tansy! A little flagged trail led from a beach to the most wonderful little bog!
.
.
We stepped very carefully, to minimise the disturbance to this delicate ecosystem. I did my best to take only pictures…
.
.
…and the Hittys left only tiny footprints!
Bog flora is wonderfully different, adapted to wet acidic soils!!! Being so low to the ground, the girls were quick to spot tiny plants, like these wee purple flowering Butterworts…
.
.
…beautiful Bog Laurel…
.
.
lovely Labrador Tea…
.
.
…fluffy Sedge…
.
.
…and carnivorous Sun Dew!!
.
.
We saw a little woodpecker, heard thrushes and caught a glimpse of a Sandhill Crane, which didn’t want to share the bog with us.
.
.
The cranes were probably there because of the thousands of wee bog frogs hopping everywhere! Constance sat quietly and a frog hopped right onto her lap!
.
.
A Lodgepole pine stump was a good place to get an overall view of the bog, and was less damp than sitting in it.
.
.
We walked back down the trail past the Club Mosses and Ferns toward the beach…
.
.
…but we stopped at the edge, not wanting to disturb the Sandhill Crane again!
.
.
Eventually the Crane went back to the bog to resume its boggy dinner…
.
.
…and we took the zodiac back to the Passing Cloud…
.
.
…where Chef Erin fed us an incredible Bog Salad for the first course of dinner!
.
Thanks so much to our favourite photographer for the spectacular Sandhill Crane, and Bog Salad photos!

This is too stunning except for the word, marvelous.
We are happy that you like the bog as much as we did! We think bogs are vastly underrated!
These have been the best blogs ever! I love them.
Thanks 🙂 we sure have been having fun remembering all the wonderful experiences we had on the trip
I am awestruck!
We had the same feeling the whole time we were up there…I didn’t know that awestruckedness could last so long!
Amen to the above comments! What a wonderful, magical place.
We loved whole trip, but the bog excursion was definitely one of the highlights!
Yes, It’s twice the blessing when you have loved ones and friends to share these wonders with.
Your photos and stories are a blessing to me. Thank You.
You are very very welcome! We loved going on the trip and now are reveling in the memories!
Loved the wee frog in Constance’s lap. We have some interesting boggy areas here on the farm but they are quite different then yours. Thanks again for the marvelous photos.
You are very welcome! Constance wished the frog had stayed to visit for a spell…let us know if your bog frogs say anything interesting to the Country Hittys!
