A Little Apple Jelly
Floradora and Graziella gave their apples to Jane, and while she doesn’t have a recipe for Crabapple Jelly per se, she has made many jellies and jams over the years so she decided to wing it. First she cut each crabapple in half…
.
.
…and put them into a pot to boil.
.
.
Well that yellow slurry is unappetising – we have heard that crabapple jelly is meant to be a lovely delicate pink colour!
.
.
Jane added a secret ingredient …
.
.
…and the pulp turned a delightful pink!
.
.
Graziella and Floradora watched the jelly bag dripping…it dripped overnight…
.
.
…and resulted in about 55 ml of juice!
.
.
They added an equal amount of sugar, then the jelly boiled for a few minutes…
.
.
…and was poured into a jar!
.
.
It made a beautifully pink Jelly…
.
.
…and it was delicious too!
.
.
How very pretty that crabapple jelly looks. I would assume that waiting for that delicacy has made it all the more wonderful in enjoyment.
It was very tasty indeed, and our favourite photographer brought us a big sack full to make more jelly with, so the humans will be able to enjoy more than a teaspoon each!!
The secret ingredient made all the difference!
It did – we were so pleased with Jane’s innovation, we may use it ourselves on the human batch (the crab apples in our new supply are bigger and yellower than we expected!)
Dear Jane,
We think your crab apple and secret ingredient jelly looks delicious. Our crab apples make a similar jelly by themselves but they have a pinkish tinge to the flesh, as well as the yellow and red skins, so that is probably why.
Our smallest person loves jellies made from either of the ingredients you used, but has just seen your post and hopes you will allow him to borrow your recipe this year.
Our crab apples are not quite ready. We sit upstairs and watch from the window. When the blackbirds start pecking at them, we know it is time to get the preserving pan out.
Enjoy your jelly!
Fondest love,
Mary and Roberts N-Q-T xxxxx
Thank you so much for your encouragement – I hope you and your small person have a lovely time picking, jellying and eating yours!
A Hitty sized harvest for sure!
It was! But we have a human-sized supply now…it was so pretty and so delicious we are keen to be making some more!
delightful!! Jane is an inspiration. the jelly looks delicious and the girls as always are a joy.
We approve of Jane’s addition! Getting ready to start the human batch…
I can imagine how delicious it is… Beautiful. Thank you for you all, Love, nia
Thank you very much, Nia…did I ever mention that my small human thinks your plum and vanilla jam is the very most delicious jam ever!?
Now I also make juice but not fresh, I mean with plenty water and sugar I boil the plums. I boil it until it gets soft. Then I drain well them all , so that there is no pulp… I fill the bottles and put them in refrigerator. When I want to drink, I fill my glass if it needs I add water… It could be so sweet… You can adjust the size according to your own taste with water. It’s been so delicious… Thank you, Love to you Both, nia
