Scraphappy Quilted Trees
Last December I finished a quilt made from scraps of Provençal fabrics…but there were scraps of the scraps left over!
.
.
I was so glad to find a pattern by Ann Wood, for little trees made of scraps…it’s called the Scrappy Tree.
Click Here for her instructions… It was a serendipitous pattern and inspiration for me to use up those precious bits of cloth.
.
.
I am making 24 of them, as my contribution to the Crafty Advent Calendar, an annual event organised by a wonderful friend. We each make 24 little gifts, wrap and number them, and exchange them in late November. I have a heart-warming and fun time making the gifts, and then opening one each day in December up until Christmas Eve.
.
.
Siyah thinks they would be much more interesting if they were filled with catnip.
.
.
Constance is somewhat more helpful than the cat, as she helps me organise the piles…
.
.
We are both quite pleased with the way they are turning out!
.
.
The next step is to do a little bit of hand quilting to hold the layers together…we dived deep into the embroidery thread box and found these little balls of bright colours that I bought in Egypt (41 years ago!!!)
.
.
Constance helped of course…
.
.
…I mostly did horizontal lines at 3/4 of an inch apart…
.
.
…with a little star at the top of the tree…
.
.
…the backs of the trees are made from the “hourglass blocks” I made for my Provençal quilt and then decided I didn’t like the way they looked overall so I didn’t sew them in…
.
.
…but I really like the way these little trees are turning out!

ScrapHappy is a group of bloggers using up scraps of anything – no new materials…Anything made of genuine scraps is eligible, and posts come out once a month on the 15th! How very fun, pretty and satisfying way to use those precious fabric scraps. I always look forward to seeing the handiwork on Scrappy 15th day of the month. Nicely done.
Thank you so much, I look forward to the 15th too – many of the people on the list make inspiring and interesting projects!
Such a calming but cheerful post! The lighting and colours together being a sense of Christmas a little early. I do love your little trees.
The low angle of the light at mid day, this time of year has such a beautiful glow…I try to capture it if I can! Making the little trees has been quite an encouraging project, using up special scraps, anticipating the fun of the advent calendar and just generally helping to think positive thoughts!.
They’re wonderful! Such lovely rich colours, festive without being too ‘traditional’ in just red and green. I can quite see that Constance was more helpful; cats tend to be more interested in scattering than stacking!
It was one of those projects that fit right in to what I wanted to do with it. I was surprised at how “complete” the final quilting stitches made each tree! And yes, Siyah would prefer to lie on top of whatever I am working on, or else bat it to the floor. Constance is much better behaved!
I love these, and I have been looking around for a gift idea for the members of my quilt group — I think I will be following in your stitches and making some of these too!
Hooray for a tiny forest of quilted trees!
So pretty, I may have to make some myself.
Thanks! I liked the tree pattern as soon as I saw it, and they were quite quick to make.
they are a great idea and “great minds think alike”. You are much farther along than I am, I’d be happy to trade one.
I am working on them a bit at a time. Luckily for the project I have a bit of a one track mind…also a deadline of next week!
I printed off Anne’s pattern with the thought I might make some trees too. But we’ll see how that goes! Yours are lovely, of course. 😊
I saw Ann’s free pattern too, but haven’t taken advantage of it yet. Your trees are lovely, and all of your posts have such a cozy feeling to them. Thank you for that!
You are welcome, and I hope you get a chance to try them too! I found that making the little trees was quick, and fun, and I do love the results!
Your trees are so lovely! What a great idea!
Thank you very much! I was glad to find the pattern at just the right moment that I could make several in time for the advent calendar.
those are so pretty & timeless. I’m not bothering with xmas this year, but I’ll try and remember the idea for another year!
❤ Some times the timing just doesn't work out…and if this idea doesn't float back to you another year, likely something else will!
those sumptuous colors make wonderful little trees…what a lovely decoration. Your fellow crafters are going to be so pleased. Plus I enjoyed seeing Siya and Constance keeping you company!
Thanks! I always try to make something that I know I would like for the advent calendar…and of course I appreciate the feline and doll company and encouragement while doing my crafty work!
I love these
Thanks! They make me feel warm, in a tiny way reminding me of the big quilt I made.
