Overshot
Constance and I worked on the warp yesterday, fiddling with a crossed warp (which meant the reed could not pack the wefts in properly) and then a missed dent in the reed (which made for a gap in the web). Both those issues were relatively easy to fix thank goodness, so we were able to weave two samples of overshot…

…so we could see that the heddles were all threaded properly and the treadle tie-up also. So many places for mistakes to creep in, we were glad that there were only two little ones! The base warp and linking wefts are linen. In the first sample the overshot weft is cotton, and the second sample has the overshot weft done in singles wool – Einband, from Iceland.

We love the rich colour of the wool, and also were very interested to see how the wool compresses slightly more than the cotton. I have several Einband colours, and can hardly wait to weave up little Hitty-sized overshot coverlets!

The weaving patterns look lovely.
We really like the look of Overshot patterns in general. This one is called “Enigma”…I should have been listening to Edward Elgar!
Well, a lot of that was in a very foreign language, but I must say, the result is lovely!
Well yes, there are a lot of specific terms that go with each craft…I hope you don’t think I am trying to baffle you with these! They make sense to weavers…and thanks! I do love the result too!
Not at all, it was quite entertaining!
I have an antique overshot quilt… it is a treasure! Thank you for this lesson in how it was done! I do love how rich the Einband color is!
The old coverlets are so interesting and beautiful, you are lucky!
This (these) will turn out to be beautiful! You’ve done a lovely job so far.
Thanks so much, I do enjoy weaving and it has been a while since I had a project of my own to work on. For the last few years I have been doing a bit of this and that at the end of the warp on my friend’s loom! This is very satisfying!
they are beautiful – they look like antiques.
Thanks so much, Martha. I picked an “olde” looking pattern so they would have that flavour!
Constance is doing a great job. The wool weft is much nicer than the cotton. The Hittys are going to be warm and cozy.
Thanks! Constance is pleased with the work as am I…now that the loom is all sorted out, it won’t take very long to weave the little coverlets! Hittys are looking forward to warm and cosy nights!
Like Kate, most of that was white noise 😂 – when I saw the first photo I thought you’d been bead weaving. Looks fab tho, and I love to see the difference between materials. Thank you.
It is so interesting how the different materials have such an impact on the finished product. I had intended to use wool for the final weavings – the cotton was “waste” yarn on a bobbin just to check that the threading and tie-up was right! And it was on the third try!
the mechanics of weaving at this level are just mystifying to me…love seeing your progress. Constance is such a perfect assistant.
Constance is a good companion – very calm and encouraging!
