Magic in the Garden
Abigail got to her favourite part of one of her favourite books…
.
.
…The Secret Garden by Frances Hodson Burnett…
.
.
…where Mary talks to Dickon and finds out that the Secret Garden is alive!
Dickon curved his wide smiling mouth.
“It’s as wick as you or me,” he said; and Mary remembered that Martha had told her that “wick” meant “alive” or “lively.”
“I’m glad it’s wick!” she cried out in her whisper. “I want them all to be wick. Let us go round the garden and count how many wick ones there are.”
.
.
Abigail ran outside to see if our garden was wick!
.
.
It is!
.
.
“When Mary found this garden it looked quite dead…then something began pushing things up out of the soil and making things out of nothing. One day things weren’t there and another they were…What is it? What is it? It’s something. It can’t be nothing! I don’t know its name so I call it Magic.”

My goodness, how “wick” your garden is! and, how beautiful. Our gardens are laden with falling snow now, We may not have the gorgeous colors you have, but we do have a beautifully dressed piece of land outfitted in pure white. Thanks for sharing your pretties, Abigail, alongside that treasured story.
There is such hope in gardens…and a special magic! We are lucky the spring comes early here!
So delightful! Your photo story and your garden! I still have my copy of the Secret Garden from when I was a girl. My aunt gave it to me. Thanks for the memories!
You are welcome – I loved the story when I read it as a child, even though some parts were confusing and strange…
Lovely
