Ocelot Flower
A friend bought some little bulbs and gave me half! Vanilla helped to plant them…
.
.
…she helped choose a spot where the flowers would be visible when they bloom in late summer…
.
.
…then she dug a deep hole and plopped in a bulb…
.
.
…and helped stamp down the soil…
.
.
…and last, we put in some stakes so we would remember where they are (and hopefully not plant things on top of them)!
These are native to central America but supposedly hardy in our zone…they are called Ocēlōxōchitl in the Aztec language – “Ocelot flower”. We love the name!

Good Luck for this beautiful Plant. I love too its name. I am excited now, By the way I loved the dress and details, so beautiful. Thank you dear Hitty Lady, Love, nia
Thank you so much nia, we went out to buy some more because we love the flower and it’s name and we are hopeful! Vanilla thanks you for your kind comment on her favourite dress!
What a thoughtful friend and glad you have Vanilla to help (she just wants to someday enjoy the flowers) 💐
You are right that Vanilla hopes for many bouquets of Ocelots!
I’ve never heard of these flowers, you’ll have to show a picture when they bloom. Vanilla will get her beautiful outfit and all the lovely lace dirty, she needs a pair of overalls.
Vanilla totally agrees about the overalls! I better get sewing…
Betsy needs overalls too, that’s why I was thinking about them 🙂
I had to look up what kind of flowers you can expect. Very interesting. Vanilla looks quite cozy out in the chilly garden.
Vanilla loves her blue spring coat, but she may have put it on too soon! We had a snowfall warning yesterday!!!
I have never heard of ocelot flowers! But I do know only too well about the need to mark where I have planted things so I don’t put something in on top – I learned that one the hard way!
They are called Mexican Shell flower on the packet, but when we looked them up and found Ocelot Flower was an alternate name we decided that was better – more descriptive and close the name they would have in the native language of their place of origin!
