Wee Felt Mittens for Hitty

No Mittens!

Abigail has no mittens!

.

.

Pattern

But that is no problem! I made a simple pattern…

.

.

cut

…and cut four identical shapes out of felt.

.

.

Sort

I arranged the four felt shapes in a line with two thumbs pointing right and two thumbs pointing left. This is so I don’t get confused when I am adding the decoration…I only want to decorate the back of the hand part of the mitten, not the palm.  It is easy to accidentally decorate two backs by mistake. Of course it isn’t the end of the world if you end up having to make one more mitten (or even two!).

.

.

decoration

I decorate the middle two mittens so there will be one left mitten and one right. I have cut out a little felt heart, appliqued it to the mitten with blanket stitch, and a couple of beads.  Other shapes are cute too, or embroidery or a combination of both.

.

.

stack

Then I stack the mittens so there is a decorated one on top and an undecorated one below…

.

.

blanket stitch

…and blanket-stitched around the edge with a contrasting thread.  Slip or overcast stitch also works to sew them together, and a matching thread is fine too.

.

.

Mittens!

There – Mittens! Abigail has biggish hands, I had to stretch the cuffs to get them over the thumbs. Luckily felt is very forgiving!

Ready to play outside

Someone is hoping for snow!

  1. You have given Abigail a boost for winter wear…a very adorable boost I’d say. I just admire your work tremendously….as well as your generous nature. Thank you.
