Icelandic Jólasveinar 3

Old Maps.

Old Maps.

Min wonders whether the Jólasveinar are having trouble finding Victoria because they are using out of date maps.  She has been to the Royal BC Museum’s exhibition on old maps – Envisioning the World  – The first Printed Maps 1472 – 1700. Sure enough,  Iceland is on the maps, even those from the 1500’s, but Victoria is not! In fact Vancouver Island did not appear on world maps until after cartographer Manuel Quimper passed through this area in the 1790’s!

Min waits for Stúfur.

Although Min is happy that no potatoes have appeared in her shoes, she is still hoping for a little present, and leaves the shoes out again just in case.  You never know, the Jólasveinar might find their way to Victoria even with an old map! She is unable to stay awake all night so she doesn’t know if anyone visited during the night.

The third Yule Lad to come is Stúfur, also called Stubby or Itty Bitty..he is small and cheerful and arrives on December 14th! His feet are cold.

  1. Oh my! Can the bear and Min speak to each other – will he tell her tales when she wakes up?
Stúfur’s feet look awfully cold. I hope he has shoes for the winter weather.

    • Min may be short a pair of shoes when she wakes up, but it looks like Stúfur might need them more than she does…He likes the look of these painted clogs, even though they are Swedish…
