Carpet Bag
I had an elegant dollhouse rug, but plebeian family of dolls. When the Hittys decided that they required a carpet bag, I determined to see if I could effect the transformation for them…
…the first thing I did was to fold the carpet in half, right sides together, and stitch up the sides. It would have been better to start stitching at the fold rather than at starting at the fringe end, you will see why in a minute…
I lined up the side seam with the centre bottom fold, creating a corner, and pinned the triangular fold…do this on both sides…
…then sewed a short straight line across each of the corners, and then turned the folded carpet right side out.
Next I inserted an ugly snap-closure change purse inside the folded and stitched carpet. I strongly recommend getting an ugly one from a thrift store – the first one I got was too nice and I decided to keep it for my change purse, so I had to go out to the thrift store a second time…
Now you see that the side seam had to be unstitched from the fringe end down to the level of the rivet in the purse frame, and the cut stitches secured with overcast stitching. Next I folded the fringe edges inside between the carpet layer and the ugly purse layer…
…and stitched the carpet in place through all the layers.
To finish the carpet bag, I stitched on a strip of fake leather over the shiny metal purse frame…
and stitched on handles.
All finished – it is ready to be filled…
…and now at least one of the Quimper Hittys can pack their bags and go travelling.
Beautiful bag!!!! Some lucky Hitty is going to be travelling in style!!! Thank you for sharing!
Yes, I like the result too. The carpet was just too perfect for my Hitty habitat, though I thought it was very beautiful…
Jaw-droppingly AWESOME!
Thank you! I bet you could make one – I think all Hittys should have carpet bags, and I am pretty sure most Hittys agree with me.
I would love to try and make one….maybe I will. Next to yours, the results might be laughable though!!!
Voila! A beautiful bag and hat for an upcoming lovely. Well done!
Thanks! We are pleased with the way they both turned out, and have hopes the intended Hitty will be appreciative.
Your Hittys are the most pampered gals around. The creative ideas you have are so wonderful, and I for one am glad that you share them with us. Keep up the good work. Denise
You are very welcome! I am very happy to share my ideas, and always hope they might inspire fun in other doll-friendly households.
jaw-dropping indeed, you have out-done yourself. Lucky Hitty who goes travelling.
I have been having a great few weeks holiday, and exercising my creative juices….it is very satisfying!
So creative…thank~you so much for sharing your talents.
You are very welcome – I always hope people might find my ideas useful, and also have fun trying them out!
Love this! It looks right out of Anne of Green Gables (only in better shape than hers was)!
Yay, it is supposed to be Anne of Green Gables-like. I know it is too neat and clean, but I am loath to tumble it about just to get that effect. I did have a look round for carpet-baggish glasses cases, which would have been the easiest, but didn’t see any.
Your crafting is, as always, outstanding and amazing and awesome. Absolutely love it! Of course, now they are going to want to travel even more…
Thanks, Kristin – I do have fun, and well, if the Hittys want to travel, I might have to make some plans to oblige them – eh?
As someone who is only going to learn to sew so I can make Hitty clothes, I am in awe. Even though you photograph every step, it still seems like magic.
I am glad if the steps seem doable – I sometimes think something is obvious when it isn’t…I think the best thing is to not be afraid to make mistakes!
I have the perfect carpet! the too-perfect carpet – and a visit to the Thrift Store is ALWAYS a treat. Dolls seem to need bags more than humans use them, even if they are not going travelling… Thank you so much.
You are very welcome! We like the carpet as a carpet too, but feel it is even more perfect in its new incarnation!
Absolutely adorable!
Thanks so much!
How exceedingly clever and lovely!! What lucky HIttys to have such a talented person looking after their every requirement.
We are lucky to have Hittys to spoil – we have so much fun here in the Quimper Hitty household!
Oh my goodness, how delightful! I am sure that the Quimper HIttys will find all kinds of magical things showing up in their new carpet bag…..
You never know – it is intended to be rather more Anne Shirley-ish than Mary-Poppins-ish, but they could share!
