Fallen fossil leaves
The mornings are getting quite chilly – look at all the leaves that have landed in the shipping container…it feels like autumn here.
Constance is pointing to a leaf that was attacked 55 million years ago, by a leaf miner!
We are packing many individual leaves and a great variety of species! Neither Constance nor I are botanists, but we are enjoying packing all the Eocene leaves. When they did fall, they ended up in an lake, and were covered by volcanic ash, we are lucky to be able to determine ancient climate and ecology just by looking at leaves!

I am loving these leaves. I’m a fossil-holic!
We really love all the leaves too, they are so well preserved and prepared, the look like they could just blow away! It is a fabulous collection!
You are both getting quite an earthy education these days.
Yes, my life is rock-y these days!
They are gorgeous!
Aren’t they just! Absolutely amazing, I wish I had more time to admire them as they are wrapped!
if those leaves fell on one it might hurt!! Love the fossils.
It might! Some of the matrices are quite substantial! Others are small, and delicate, almost like potato chips! Those ones would shatter if they were dropped.
These fossil leaves are miracles from the past. And are the ancestors of our current trees.Amazing.
