Fennel
Some people think fennel is a weed but Opal and Agathe like it.
It can be a challenge to climb…
…the stems are thin and there is not much to hold on to,
But it very nice at the top.
…and the umbels can be picked and added to a jug of water for a nice flavour…
And they are pretty in a bouquet.

Can you dry the seed heads for curry?
We do dry some of the seed heads, they make the house smell spicy. We leave most out for the birds to eat in the winter, but I use some of them in Coleslaw, or tomato soup and in Limpe.
MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmm how delicious!!!!
What fun for the adventurous QHs….the fennel forest looks like an out of this world creation from a doll’s eyes with a human perspective.
It is like a forest! The light was so pretty on the fennels this morning, and it didn’t take much convincing to get the block twins out in it!
The Bonsai Hittys learn a lot of botany from the Quimper Hittys, and it’s always fun!
We are amateurs really, but we do like to find out about the animals, vegetables and minerals in our environs.
oh such fun pics. I have grown bronze fennel in the flower bed before. Never tried putting the umbrels in water for a drink. Will put that in my garden book for next year!! thanks.
We like the slightly spicy taste of the water done this way, also a stalk of mint is very refreshing, and a branch rosemary adds a nice flavour…
Is this the same sort of finocchio that we eat? It’s awfully wild and un-tamable looking – got a mind of it’s own…like those two climbing it!
I am not sure – but if it isn’t the same it must be a close relative!
You and your photographer make the most wonderful, colorful, and educational stories. Thank you. I am amazed at the efforts you give to this blog everyday.
Thank you,

Thanks! Mostly it is me taking the photos, but I admit that when the other guy lends a hand the results are pretty gorgeous. I took all the pictures in this blog, but he was very helpful with advice and setting up, and post-production of the “flavour” image.
They sell fennel here as a plant/herb – so certainly not considered a weed. Love it in the jug of water, how pretty.
I can’t believe that people buy fennel in the shops here, but they do!
