Patchwork coverlet
Mormor helped to make a coverlet using reproduction designs from the 1860’s. She recognized one of the pieces of fabric!

Squares are sewn into strips, and strips pinned together…

…and then sewn into blocks.

The top is pressed…

…and a backing fabric pinned into place. Little quilts like this one don’t get batting or they will end up too stiff. Then the binding is sewn on…
.
.
…and finally the pieced top and the backing get tufted together. Mormor used the yarn that she span…making a sort of “tailor’s tack” with the yarn and then doing a reef knot.

Here is the finished coverlet.

Mormor has made a very charming quilt and so well done…I admire the brilliant blues that come forth in it.
Mormor and I are very fond of brown and blue combinations.
my parents owned a country store and my Mom made quilts like this with men’s suiting samples, worsted wool. We all had them at our summer cottage. As a child I used to untie the yarn knots and use them as doll’s hair ribbons. Mormor’s quilt is beautiful and I see her fabric piece.
What a nice memory…my mormor made suiting quilts too, and work shirt quilts…they were worn to rags, But I still have a couple I can’t bear to get rid of.
Mormor has such a wonderful gentle expression. The new quilt is so precise and well pieced.! The Country HIttys and I are in awe of how well all those squares match up. What fun that one of the squares was so recognizable to her.
Mormor and I had a good day yesterday, pinning and stitching. We seem to get along well together 😊.
It’s so nice to have had a piece from your outfit to go in the coverlet. Turned out very pretty and will be welcomed when the cold Winter days arrive.
It is fun to find pieces of cloth that you recognize in a patchwork coverlet! Mormor was very amused, and she is looking forward to cosy comfortable nights this winter.
The quilt is absolutely beautiful…so cozy and warm and comfy.
Thanks! It was a good day’s work, and we love it’s inviting comfortableness.
Beautiful and very neat work indeed. Always lovely to have a few special fabrics in a quilt as well. This will be perfect now the Autumn is drawing in, it won’t be long before the colder nights will dictate the need for a lovely quilt such as this.
yes, it is so true – a pretty new coverlet will warm Mormor’s heart as well as her toes!
