All Souls’ Day
Soul Cake, A soul Cake,
Please good mistress, a soul cake…
.
.
An apple a pear, a plum, a cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry!
.
.
Down into the cellar,
And see what you can find,
If the barrels are not empty,
We hope you will prove kind.
.
.
We hope you will prove kind,
With your apples and strong beer,
And we’ll come no more a-souling
Till this time next year.
.
.
The lanes are very dirty,
My shoes are very thin,
I’ve got a little pocket
To put a penny in.
.
.
If you haven’t got a penny,
A ha’penny will do ;
If you haven’t got a ha’penny,
Then God bless you!

This is an incredibly rich look into the life at Quimper Street, destination Hitty Household. The link to the song, and that rendition is more than ethereal. And the prompting of that little recipe card has started out my day thinking of Soul Cakes. I’d never heard of them before. Thank you.
We’ve been enjoying the season, and love this song, especially the last verse, wishing well from the empty-pocketed to the empty-pursed.
Honestly, on viewing this delightful story, it brought me back to the 60’s, listening to Peter, Paul and Mary singing this folk song. I was humming it in my mind as I viewed your wonderful photos. The way the Hitty’s illustrated the song with their baking was adorable. (No one does it like you do.)
Yes, P, P, and M did a nice rendition too…we like them both!
Lovely and I so enjoyed the link to Sting’s interpretation of this old song. He is one of my favorite artists. Your photos and story are a delight!
We thought Jane the penny wooden was the right person to illustrate the story, besides being the one who likes spending the most time in the kitchen of all the dolls!
There is always something interesting going on and opportunities to learn something new. Wonderful
The Quimper Hittys love learning about these old traditions, (and are always game to try a new recipe!)
