Afterthought Heel
Rose’s latest sock is ready for the heel to be inserted…
.
.
…the set-up includes a row of pink waste yarn knitted into the sock where the heel will go. The rows above and below the set-up row were threaded with waste yarn, which will help with the next step…
.
.
…which involves unpicking the knitted row, so the heel opens up. The threaded rows stay in place on the yarn…
.
.
…and are then picked up and knitted.
.
.
The heel is formed by decreasing every other row and then Kitchener-stitching the last 16 stitches.
.
.
Well, the sock is done at last – some member of the family is going to be well-heeled (as soon as we knit sock #2)!!
.
.
.
my Mom always knit the heel this way and then she could unravel to replace the heel when it wore out. 🙂
I was thinking that would be an advantage! Unfortunately the recipient of this sock is moving to Toronto 😦
Of course I would be willing to mend them if he mails them back to me…
well…..I have no idea what Rose just did! It looks really complicated. The Country Httys and I are just astounded and once again we are in awe at the talent in the Quimper cupboard!!
We had no idea either until looking up the instructions on Youtube…it made more sense when we watched it than reading the instructions! We are now hoping sock #2 turns out approximately the same!
What a marvelous way to knit a heel! “One Small Stitch” related another fascinating note about this type of heel. Well done, Rose!!
We were very pleased with it, our first ever “afterthought heel” was a success we will have to plan to do more (oh the irony of planning an afterthought!)
