A Cedar Box Bedstead
A few years ago the Quimper Hittys acquired some lovely cedar boxes. I made mattresses and pillows so they could use them as beds…
.
.
…but we decided to add cotton reel legs under the boxes to lift the bed off the floor and out of the drafts!
.
.
To make the spool legs fit around the bed slats, Opal and Agathe had to get out the cross-cut saw…
.
.
…and make some little notches…
.
.
…and smear glue on all the contact edges.
.
.
Then they had to sit in the bed frame along with a piece of railway track to weight it until the glue was dry and solid.
.
.
It felt like a real bed, but the girls were not completely satisfied…
.
.
…there was something missing…
.
.
So we fiddled around with clothes pins…
.
.
…and a cheese board…
.
.
Such smart, clever and skilled girls!
These girls are always curious, hanging around and ready to lend a hand if there is anything that requires a hammer, saw, or messy glue. They love it when construction is going on in the Hitty cupboard!
WOW! This is an absolutely awesome bed. You have a wonderful knack for seeing end results in materials used for other purposes. Truly amazing. I especially loved the twin’s saw and the repurposing of the clothespins.
Opal and Agathe love their cross-cut saw! Any excuse at all and they have it out – making notches, felling weeds – you name it!
Adorable!!

Thanks!
How could St Nicholas walk past such clever work??? These girls are so very creative…and they know exactly how to make their great ideas come true…wonder if they could also participate in scrap happy days!
I didn’t think of saving the project for Scrap Happy, but I do have another box bed…! The girls are happy to report that St Nicholas came to the house last night, and he did not leave any coal!!!
Delightful!
Opal, Agathe and I thank you!
Thank you so much…
You are so welcome – It is the season to encourage cosiness!
Pure QUAINTNESS!
We love to incorporate cotton reels and clothes pins in our constructions, and the girls are glad their bed is up off the floor!
Hi Kjerstin, Those cedar boxes look like they will make quite snug little Hitty beds.

Thanks! They seemed an ideal size when I spotted them on the “remainders” table, and the block twins were glad to help with the improvements!
adorable and the moccasin/boots are beautiful, St. Nicholas won’t miss them. I have a collection of wooden spools too, the plastic ones aren’t nearly as useful.
The Kamiks were a gift last year from a young Hitty friend who used to live in the Northwest Territory. We love them! I think your bears might need spool chairs!
Those girls are so ingenious. The cotton reels, yes, I could have imagined that, but the head- and foot-boards made of clothes-pegs are so clever!
We’ve been wanting to try making a bed using the peg kind of clothes pegs next…these ones made excellent bedposts, which was all that Opal and Agathe were concerned about yesterday!
Ohhh my … what an awesome bed and I especially LOVE their quilt. Clever Hitty’s 😍
They love their quilt too! The Hittys are more often involved in textile projects, but wooden girls find wood projects satisfying too!
That’s so cute! They look so cozy. Great idea for its construction!
Thanks! They are happiest making things from what we already have lying around the house!
The clever little darlings! Of course they need a place to hang the shoes! Christmas is coming.
Opal and Agathe were especially gleeful to find these big boots to hang at the end of the bed!
Fascinated me, especially the last photograph… Thank you, Love, nia
Thank you Nia, we like to make new things out of old things that usually get thrown away…the wooden cotton reels have been waiting for a project like this!
The Quimper human is soooo clever. Darling beds…and the use of the clothes pins…GENIUS!!
We have lots of bits and pieces in our “junk drawer” and it is always delightful to find the perfect use for them!
love, love, love this.
